Often, yes. Mold behind walls or under floors sheds spores and tiny fragments. They settle into dust over time. A dust sample can show species you would never see and help you understand your level of exposure. It can't tell you where the mold is or whether a room is safe. If your report comes back elevated, an inspection is the way to find the source.
One home test covers 1,000 square feet. You collect one combined dust sample from different places in your home, and the lab reads it as one picture of the home. You might want a second test for a separate unit, space, or building.
Start with your report, which shows which species are elevated and what they usually point to. Species that grow only on wet materials suggest a leak or past water damage. Share the report with a mold inspector so they know what to look for. Then find and fix the moisture source, remove wet or moldy building materials under containment, and retest to confirm the fix worked. If you have symptoms, check your free mold risk score or talk with a MoldCo provider.

About ERMI: The Environmental Relative Moldiness Index was developed by EPA researchers. The EPA states it should be used only for research, has not been validated for routine public use. The EPA Office of Inspector General warned in 2013 that the public could be misled into thinking the test is EPA-approved. It is not.
